Top Tips for Keeping Your Blog Fun to Read

Over the past couple of years of blog writing and blog reading we have put together a list of our Blog Pet Peeves – things to avoid if you want your blog to be easy and fun to read!

  • Avoid small fonts.  It may be that we are just getting old and our eyes are getting worse but any font below a size 12 is just too small!
  • Do not, we repeat, do not have auto-loading music on your  blog.  Nothing is worse than logging onto a new blog and having music come blaring out of your speakers! If you have to have music, let us choose to turn it on or off.
  • Avoid flashing or rapid moving banners/ads on your site. It hurts our eyes and makes us a little queasy!
  • Keep your blog easy to read.  Along with avoiding small fonts do not use a blog template that has a dark background with light text. They are harder to read.

Do you have any blog pet peeves? We’d love to hear them!

Amen (X10) on the “please keep music off of your blogs”!

What you said! I really really dislike dark backgrounds for reading, glad you put that in :)

I’d have to say keep your posts short, sweet, and to the point. I really get annoyed when bloggers beat around the bush, telling some long drawn out story before they get to the useful info. I like stories, don’t get me wrong, just not ones that take forever to read!

Too funny about the music. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lunged at the volume control late at night when I read a new blog and music hits me unexpectedly! usually it’s late at night when my family is sleeping and I’m tip toeing around!

Christina,
We so agree about keeping it short and sweet. Whenever we see large blocks of text we both start skimming. If you have a long story to tell just make sure you break up the text into smaller paragraphs or make it into a series of posts. Thanks for the tip!

Completely agree on the auto-music. I wish that my browser had a mute button on it with a keyboard shortcut so I didn’t have to scroll around like mad trying to find the source of the noise :) .
