Discover: What Will They Be When They Grow Up?

We have designated Tuesday as a day where we will have different women share “Moments & Memories” in their lives.

We plan to feature women from all walks of lives – it may be in the form of an interview or as a guest writer. The column on Tuesday will be centered around our word of the month. We’d love to feature you as a guest writer. Qualifications: No experience necessary…just be willing to share a great moment or memory with other women. Send us an email and we’ll schedule a date. Our guest writers do not necessarily have to have a website or a blog as we want iLashGirls to be a place where every woman has a voice!

Today Leigh Anne has a special memory to share.

Twenty years ago this fall my first born Logan began his first day of Kindergarten.  Doesn’t he look cute in the outfit I picked out for him?!

One of the things I have discovered over the last twenty years of parenting is how fun it is to watch your children grow up!

Watching as they discover the things that they are passionate about and love to do.

Watching as they discover their talents and gifts.

You provide them with opportunities, direction, counsel and advice as they discover and explore those talents and gifts but a lot of it  is watching  and waiting to see what it is they turn out to be when they grow up!

This Fall, instead of taking a picture of Logan on his first day of school, I took a picture of his first day of work.  Logan graduated from college in April and is now a grown-up with a real job – yeah!!!

Here he is dressed up for the first day of work (I still picked out his shirt!) in front of HIS new car – one that he picked out and paid for!!

Logan has discovered that  he loves working with people, planninig and promoting so Public Relations is a great fit for him right now!

We are so proud of what Logan has grown up to be!

For some reason he wouldn’t let me take a picture of him at his new desk on his first day of work!?

What a cutie pie!! Your children are adorable. I don’t know how you raise 4 children, do all of your activities, takes all these treks around Portland and outside of Portland, be a Creative Memories leader, write your homebased mom blog and these other blogs and share with us, take trips to the beach and on and on and on. I am amazed!!! But Logan is a total cutie pie – you can tell him I said that!!

I love this story! I have so much to look forward to with my three kids (13, 11, & 2yrs). My dad has always told me that we can judge our successes by looking at our children and patting ourselves on the back when they are all grown up, happy, healthy and doing well :o )

Leigh Anne,
You have good reason to be proud of Logan! The best thing is that all of that love, support, time and effort is paying off as he steps out on his own.

My oldest grandson Nate graduated from BYU also in April and is now working at a job in Chicago. He was married last year and his wife Jessica graduated with him. We are amazed and proud that they both have jobs in today’s economy.

Cute picture and a happy story!

Our children, 6 of them, have taken very different paths, different from each other and some different from what we hoped and what is traditional. I always hoped for indepent minded children – I would change that hope now!! Some have been totally traditional – going to college, getting married, etc. and others have just gone a very different path including dropping out of high school and I won’t go into more detail.

It has been interesting to watch them, gratifying in some cases, terrifying in others. They are all good kids but some have certainly taken their sweet time in deciding how to approach adulthood.

I would never judge my personal success based on the choices they have made. I beat myself up over that one for way too long and it’s a loosing battle!! I know that we have set a good example, have done everything that we have been capable of doing – at times we’ve fallen woefully short but we’ve always done the very best we kenw how -, and they have this darn thing called freedom to choose what they want despite the best efforts and advice. As I watch them though I am beginning to see that the ones who followed the path we encouraged are doing well and are happy and the ones who didn’t are slowly coming around and getting back on track.

Bottom line is – it isn’t over ’til it’s over!!

Thanks, Kathy (above) for your insights. I totally agree. I have beat myself up for a long time over some of the decisions of my children. But yet, they were taught correctly and I cling to the promises that they will return to the correct paths. Logan is an amazing child as are Clark, Cali, and Tessa.

I remember commenting to my mother decades ago, ‘Aren’t you grateful we all turned out okay?” Her immediate reply, “Now, I am concerned over grandchildren, great-grandchildren and that all of you continue on the correct path.” How true. Until our last breath we mothers will be praying for our children, their decisions, their happiness and ways for them to overcome their challenges.

Can’t begin to explain the feeling of having raised three, Leigh Anne, Karen and Richard, loving, dependable, successful, thoughtful and beautiful children. How fortunate we have been. Wish I could hang around to watch those eleven grandchildren and, so far, one grandson. Maybe I’ll have a great view from beyond.
