Choosing a {Fun} Name for Your Blog

We're moving! Visit us at Find Your Sock Yarn and re-subscribe to get the latest updates. Your favorite features like Question of the Week, Words of Wisdom quotes and fun giveaways will be there. Archives will remain here for now. Thanks for visiting!

We’ve observed that one of the hardest things that people get stuck on is naming their blog. We also think it is one of the most FUN things to do!

We have learned a lot from Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.net and there is a wealth of information at his site. Here is a great post about finding the right domain name:

Choosing the domain name for your blog

When you have about three to five choices (because your first choice may not be available), you can reserve your domain name. This becomes your “web address” and there are many different websites that offer this service.

We have been very happy with our web host for this site which is Bluehost.com and have reserved several domain names with them.
(We have lots of fun ideas for future blogs and we’ll keep you posted when we launch another one!)

Another site we have both used to reserve domain names is www.GoDaddy.com

Once you have your domain name reserved, you need a web host which simply means they will host your site and keep all your files, pictures, etc., on their server and make it work on the internet. There are many hosts to choose from – just deciding on which one was a little overwhelming! With over a year under our belts, we still like Bluehost.com.

Finally, the FREE blogging software that we use is WordPress and it is really easy to use.

That’s it – three steps and you are ready to start blogging.

  1. Reserve your domain name
  2. Choose your web host
  3. Install WordPress

Go at your own pace, don’t feel overwhelmed, just jump in and have some FUN!

Ask us anything!! If we don’t know the answer we will do our best to direct you to the right place for help. We had a million questions when we started and we learned and helped each other along the way. We’d love to hear if you’re jumping in and starting a blog for fun this summer!

Just be careful with who hosts your web site. We used GoDaddy and are now moving because of problems with them that include incredibly inappropriate materials.

Joanne–Great point to consider! We’ve only used them to reserve domain names in the past but we now use Bluehost for everything.

What information is safe to post on your blog? I use mine to keep family and friends updated on what my family is up to. Is it safe to put names and pictures of my kids on there?

Ann–It’s a split decision :) Some bloggers do, some don’t – some use code names or initials for their kids. You should do what feels comfortable to you. We think it depends on the age of the children and what you’re posting. Things on the internet can stick around forever and mostly we think if you use good judgment and common sense than it’s fine!
