Word of the Month ~ Abundance

Give us your definition of abundance:

Having faith that there is enough of all we need and want to have our deepest desires and purposes fulfilled, lavished upon and flourishing.

Can you remember a time when the “pass it on” or “pay it forward” abundance mentality changed your life or someone else’s?

I absolutely believe in the golden rule. I was challenged in an authenticity course a few years ago to do a “pay it forward” act. I went to my coffee shop to hang out and paid for the next few drinks after me. I sat in a comfy chair and watched the reactions of the free drink winners when the clerk said it had been paid for. What a joy to see their faces light up with surprise and disbelief! It was a blessing in their day which then was a gift to my day! There are so many different and simple ways we can do this. Come on everyone!

Another thing for us to remember is that a lot of times we may get “paid back” from a “pay it forward” in ways we weren’t expecting or wanting. Back in my direct sales days when I was with Mary Kay, I was working with a new Consultant. I spent lots of time training her. After three months, when she needed to place her active order and she hadn’t done ANYTHING to be able to place the order, which would have been a nice “pay it forward” for me, she instead told me that she was quitting. She then handed me a note. It was a thank you note and it changed my life forever….it’s 17 years old and I still have it. No, she didn’t order, however, she did “pay it forward” with her sincere gratitude. She made sure I knew the difference my believing in her, helping her feel pretty and valued meant to her. This has been “paid forward” many, many times since to many, many others thru the years because it’s now what I make sure to give to everyone who crosses my path. Thank you, Teresa!

Do you need more or less of these things in your life?

chocolate–less
caffeine–less
time–neither
shoes–more, more, more
girlfriends–perfect as is!
money–isn’t it obvious!
pampering–bring it on!

As a life coach, how do you teach or show others about abundance in their life? Any fun exercise or technique you use to open their eyes to abundance?

First and foremost, my work with clients is to help them see, know and understand that they have choices!! Most of the time this does not feel like reality….we feel stuck and scared instead. We have to remember that absolutely EVERYTHING is a choice. If we brush our teeth, if we wear matching socks, if we get the mail, if we put gas in our car….all are choices. We don’t have to do any of these things…really! And, we always have MORE choices than we think we do.

Secondly, I challenge clients to define abundance for themselves. This can be tricky if they are having trouble “believing” in it. A way to make this easier is for them to figure out a metaphor that resonates abundance to them. Some metaphors have been: a wheat field, an ocean, the sky. You can see the vastness of all of those metaphors.

Thirdly and most fun, is to have the client ask the universe/abundance/God to show them abundance in the form of a tangible sign. You can ask for a specific sign like butterflies or pennies. Sometimes you’ll just start noticing the same “sign” showing up. I had this happen with “feathers”! One day during my quiet, devotional time, I asked God and the angels to show me that they were with me. After that, almost every time I would go for a walk I’d see a feather. I would look down at just the right spot and there it would be. I have so many feathers now….even an EAGLE feather! These feathers tell me I am not alone and that I am on the right track with things in my life. I’ve had feathers show up in the middle of my entry way. That was the day I REALLY needed the abundance because what I had in my “tank” wasn’t enough to support me.

Why do signs show us abundance? Because the sign reminds you that abundance is as simple as asking for it. The heavens want to provide but we are too busy taking control, worrying and trying to figure everything out.

I thought abundance was about money? When you start seeing abundance with simple things like pennies or feathers how do you think your confidence in regards to the flow of money will change in your life? IT WILL! Remember though, abundance is about the flow of everything in your life….peace, patience, friendships, laughter, money, random acts of kindness being paid to you, etc.

Share a life lesson learned about abundance, something, perhaps that you know now that you didn’t know when you were 18?

I was recently divorced, had a mortgage and was a single mom to my four year-old daughter. I come from a non-risk-taking family so the fact that I was divorced was enough risk for them. I started getting requests for coaching that I kept denying. The requests kept coming….can you say abundance? Finally, I started doing coaching sessions on my lunch break and then after I put my daughter to bed. A few months later, I couldn’t find any more space for the number of clients I had….can you say abundance? I was not marketing this it was just all word of mouth. A few months later, I quit my full time job and PAYCHECK to be self-employed doing this coaching thing. That was 10 years ago this month! I was coaching when no one knew what coaching was. I remember having to pick a number out of the blue sky for my 1/2 hour rate….can you say abundance? I can recall having some nervousness but more than that it was a feeling of this is the “right” thing, which is what I call a HEART decision. I knew I could not not do it. I also came to grips with the fact that this would not be a money decision for me so I didn’t worry about my bills or income. I was responsible and careful but not worrying…..instead CHOOSING to trust and be in abundance of it all. And the abundance includes…incredible clients, joy, tears, celebration, heartbreak, money, travel, retreats, reward, time. Won’t you join me…..choose ABUNDANCE FOR YOURSELF!
